The tradition started in the mid-1800s, when high-society ladies would promenade in their Easter finery after church, and has since evolved into a showcase for chapeau artistry.
The celebration came as Christians around the city marked the solemn holiday by attending mass, including legions of Catholics who packed into St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Having new clothes for Easter had deep roots in European customs. Sacred times called for special forms of dress—material markers of holiness and celebration. Distinctive garb for Easter, like one's "Sunday best", for centuries showed the solemnity and sacredness of the season.
